Morus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Moraceae, and it is a small deciduous fast growing trees commonly known as mulberries, growing wild and under cultivation in many temperate regions of India.The plant has three main species by color of its fruits: white, red, and black mulberry.The leaves are simple and alternately arranged, and often lobed and serrated on the margin. Immature fruits are white, green, or pale yellow. The fruit turns from pink to red while ripening, then dark purple or black, and has a sweet flavor when fully ripe. The plants are usually pruned once a year during the monsoon season to a height of 1.5,1.8 m (5,6 ft) and allowed to grow with a maximum of 8,10 shoots at the crown.Fruits are good source of iron, potassium, calcium and phosphorus. Mulberry plant are good shade giving in the garden. Staking mulberry trees in the early years will prevent windrock, leading to good root development. Shahtoot responds to applied water and nutrients. Shahtoot can be pruned during winter dormancy or rainy season.

Sunlight

  • Morning sunlight of more than 6 hours a day is ideal for flowering and fruit development.

Soil

  • The soil should be well drained, fertile and rich in organic content for growing of Shahtoot plant.

Watering

  • Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
  • Apply 4 cup (approx.200ml) of water when the top soil (1-2 inch) in the pot feels dry to touch.
  • Do not overwater the plant.
  • As a rule of thumb, water the plants thoroughly in summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
  • Water should be applied preferably in the morning or evening.

Application of Fertilizer

  • Before application of fertilizer loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so, it can uptake the nutrients and moisture easily.
  • Apply organic fertilizer once a month during the main growing season (August-October and February-March)
  • Apply water immediately after application of fertilizer.

Plant Protection

  • Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants.
  • For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.

Donts

  • Do not overwater the plant.
  • Avoid applying water in hot afternoon because it may cause fungus infection.

Shahtoot Care

Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location:

  • Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
  • Apply 4 cup (approx.200ml) of water when the top soil (1-2 inch) in the pot feels dry to touch.
  • Keep the plant in indirect bright light.
  • Do not re-pot for min. 2 weeks after receiving it.
